A Laboratory for Rethinking Communities with Art at the Centre

Through experimental art experiences and innovative partnerships, SMK Fridays has, since 2013, challenged what an art museum is, where it belongs, and who it is for.

Using art as its point of departure, SMK Fridays acts as a social and cultural catalyst that creates space for new voices and fosters diverse forms of hosting, participation, and community.

In constant exchange with both the museum and the world around it, SMK Fridays functions as a learning engine and a laboratory for new ideas, offering fresh perspectives on art, history, everyday life, society, and the world at large.

Six times a year, SMK Fridays presents a diverse programme that embraces both the broad and the niche, the familiar and the unexpected, established names and emerging voices, always centred around SMK’s art collection and always free and open to everyone.

“Through experimental art experiences and innovative partnerships, SMK Fridays challenges what an art museum is, where it belongs, and who it is for. In constant exchange with the museum and the wider world, SMK Fridays serves as a learning engine and a laboratory that brings new perspectives to art, history, everyday life, life itself, and the world.”

Three Strategic Focus Areas

Digital SMK Fridays
Expanding opportunities for participation by making surprising and engaging art experiences accessible to everyone, regardless of who they are or where they are located.

Diverse SMK Fridays
Through strategic and equitable partnerships, ensuring that a wider range of voices are represented at SMK and that more people feel welcome in the programme, the formats, and the museum itself.

SMK Fridays On the Move
Through strategically developed pop-ups, innovative collaborations, and strong partnerships, challenging where and how museum experiences can take place and unfold.
